Residential Solar PV in Sabah

1. What are the benefits of installing solar at home?

Solar can reduce the electricity you buy from the grid, lower your electricity bill, and generate clean energy for your own use.
Under Solar Rakyat Sabah, eligible excess solar energy exported to the grid may receive bill credits under the programme rules. Actual savings depend on your electricity usage, system output, tariff and approved system design.

2. Will solar make my electricity bill RM0?

Not necessarily. Solar can reduce your bill, but the final amount depends on your household usage, solar generation, fixed or minimum charges, the applicable tariff and programme rules. JSS will recommend a system based on your actual electricity consumption instead of promising a zero bill.

3. Can solar power my house during a blackout?

A standard grid-connected solar system automatically shuts down during a blackout for safety, so it will not power the house. Backup power requires a compatible battery, hybrid inverter and backup arrangement designed for selected essential loads.

4. Do I need a battery, and can I add one later?

A battery is optional for a standard grid-connected Solar Rakyat Sabah system. It may be included initially or added later if the system is designed for it. Under Solar Rakyat Sabah, battery energy must be used for self-consumption and cannot be exported to the grid.

5. How long do solar panels and inverters last?

Solar panels are commonly designed to operate for about 25 to 30 years. Inverters may require replacement earlier, often after around 10 to 15 years. Actual service life depends on the selected product, environment, usage and maintenance; the manufacturer's published warranty applies.

6. Do solar panels work during cloudy or rainy weather?

Yes. Solar panels still generate electricity in cloudy or rainy conditions, but their output is lower than during bright sunlight. Annual system estimates should account for Sabah's local weather conditions.

Solar Rakyat Sabah & NEM Support

1. What is Solar Rakyat Sabah?

Solar Rakyat Sabah is a residential net energy metering programme for eligible domestic consumers in Sabah. Solar energy is used in the home first, while eligible excess energy may be exported through a bi-directional meter and credited under the programme rules.

2. Who is eligible to apply?

The programme is for eligible domestic consumers in Sabah who own or have legal rights to occupy the premises and have an eligible Sabah Electricity account. Participation in an earlier solar programme, account arrears or other account issues may affect eligibility. JSS will check the current requirements before submission, and final approval remains with the relevant authorities.

3. How does Solar Rakyat Sabah work?

During the day, solar power serves the home's electricity use first. Eligible excess energy is measured by a bi-directional meter and exported to the grid. Imported and exported energy are recorded for billing and credits according to the current programme terms. Unused credits, transfer rules and the settlement period remain subject to those terms.

4. What system size is allowed?

The current limits are up to 5 kWac for a single-phase domestic supply and up to 10 kWac for a three-phase domestic supply. The recommended system may be smaller depending on electricity usage, available rooftop or porch space, site conditions and approval requirements. Ground-mounted systems are not allowed under this programme.

5. How do I know whether my home has single-phase or three-phase supply?

You can check your Sabah Electricity bill or the main electrical distribution board. JSS can also verify the supply phase during the initial assessment because it affects the maximum permitted system size.

6. Who handles the Solar Rakyat Sabah application?

JSS can assist with system design, document preparation, application submission, installation, testing, commissioning and coordination with Sabah Electricity and the relevant authorities. JSS manages the process with the customer, but approval and utility timelines are outside JSS's control.

7. What happens if I sell or transfer the property?

The solar equipment normally remains attached to the property. The electricity account, programme contract and any remaining credits may be subject to separate transfer rules and approvals. Contact JSS before the sale or account transfer so the current requirements can be checked; transferability is not guaranteed.

8. Is there a quota or application limit?

Yes. Official programme information states a total quota of 20 MW, available on a first-come, first-served basis until 2028 or until fully utilised, whichever comes first. Quota availability should be checked at the time of application and is not guaranteed.

Quotation & Site Assessment

1. What information do I need for an initial assessment or quotation?

Please provide the

  • Installation address,
  • Google Maps location pin,
  • the latest six months of Sabah Electricity bills
  • Single-phase or three-phase

These details help JSS assess electricity usage, location and a suitable preliminary system size.
For the formal application, additional items may be required, including the applicant's identification, proof of ownership or legal right to occupy the premises, the Solar Rakyat Sabah Assessment Form and technical documents prepared by qualified persons. The electricity account should have no unresolved arrears or account issues.

2. Is my roof suitable for solar, and how much space is needed?

JSS will assess the roof or porch area, orientation, condition, shading, structure and safe installation access. The required space depends on the number and dimensions of the selected panels. A proposal is confirmed only after the available area and site conditions have been checked.

3. Can JSS provide a quick preliminary quotation?

Yes. JSS can prepare a preliminary proposal after receiving complete electricity bills, the installation address and location pin. The turnaround depends on the completeness and complexity of the request, so a fixed one-day completion time should be confirmed for each enquiry. Final design and pricing remain subject to site verification and current programme requirements.

Installation, Maintenance & Warranty

1. How long does installation take?

Once the required approvals are obtained, materials are ready and the site is prepared, physical installation commonly takes about one to three days. The actual duration depends on system size, roof and electrical conditions, access and weather. Testing, commissioning, meter work and permission to operate may take additional time.

2. How much maintenance does a solar system require?

Solar systems generally require little maintenance. Recommended care includes cleaning when needed, keeping panels free from leaves or heavy dirt, monitoring system performance and arranging periodic inspections. Cleaning frequency depends on the site environment and roof access.

3. What happens if the system has an issue after installation?

Contact JSS with the system alert, monitoring screenshot or a description of the issue. JSS can perform initial troubleshooting and arrange inspection or warranty support where required. Equipment warranty coverage follows the selected manufacturer's terms, while service or workmanship coverage follows the agreed JSS contract.

4. Why choose Jesselton Solar Services?
